Ki-On-Twog-Ky, Cornplanter, or Handsome Lake
The son of a Seneca woman and white father, Cornplanter (also known as John O’Bail after his Dutch-trader father), became Chief of the Seneca. During the American Revolution, he led war parties for the British against the colonials, but after the revolution, he decided the best way to help his people was to keep peace with the new Americans. In appreciation for keeping the Seneca neutral during the Indian wars in Ohio, Cornplanter was given a grant of land along the western bank of the Allegheny River, where he died “aged about 100 years.”
